The laboratory following analysis and validation of each result will then compile a report which will be sent to your GP either electronically via a secure network or via hard copy through confidential mail. This will depend on the doctor’s clinic set up.
The doctor who ordered the test or a member of the doctor’s clinic will either contact you or have you booked in for a follow up appointment regarding your test results.
The length of time between taking the blood sample and when the doctor gets the results can vary greatly depending on the complexity of the test. This can be from as little as an hour to as much as several weeks. Urgent tests are performed immediately. Non-urgent tests may be performed the next day or on the next run of that particular test. Specialised tests may need to be sent away to a reference laboratory and results may not be available for some time.
Ask your doctor how soon he or she expects your test results to be available and how long you should wait before contacting their office if you have not received any news about your test results.
